Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a surprising switch to one of La Liga’s top clubs.
Klopp left his role as Liverpool’s manager at the end of last season after spending nearly nine successful years at the club.
During his tenure at Anfield, Klopp won eight major trophies, including the club’s first Premier League title.
Citing burnout as his reason for leaving his role at Liverpool, Klopp decided to take a rest and spend more time with his family away from the intense life of management.
Despite his public desire to stay away from active football management, Klopp has remained one of the most sought-after coaches, and he has not been without admirers since he left Liverpool.
For example, the United States Men’s National Team tried to hire him and even held discussions with him.
But Klopp insisted he was not keen on the vacant managerial seat at that time.
However, Klopp has since taken up a less stressful job as the Global Head of Red Bull.
He is set to resume his new job next year.
Yet, it appears that another top team is already plotting to approach Klopp.
Atletico Madrid linked with Jurgen Klopp
According to Spanish outlet Relevo, the former Liverpool manager is one of the options that Atletico Madrid could consider if they relieve long-serving coach Diego Simeone of his duties.
Simeone is hugely popular at the Wanda Metropolitano and is one of the longest-serving coaches in Europe, having joined Atletico in 20212.
However, he is gradually losing his popularity in the Spanish capital.
Since his La Liga title-winning season in 2020/21, he hasn’t been able to win another trophy, despite spending around £170m this summer.
The introduction of Carlos Bucero as director of football has not helped issues, and reports have emerged that Simeone has ‘lost power’ at the club.
The report adds that Klopp is one of the coaches Atletico will consider should they part ways with Simeone.
“At Atletico, there are coach profiles that have been very popular for a long time,” the report said.
“But the decision to go for a specific one will depend on the moment in which the vacancy is created.
When that outcome occurs, we will have to see which coaches have work, which are unemployed and who are willing to break a contract to inherit Cholo’s (Simeone) position.
Klopp was always highly valued at the club.”
Meanwhile, the report claims that former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is the front-runner if the Atletico Madrid managerial seat ever becomes vacant.
